The Archibald Prize - Past Student Success

White Cocoon by Matt Doust

Ex-Kalamunda SHS student Matt Doust has had his painting White Cocoon selected into the Archibald Prize.

Another finalist in this year's prize is Abdul Abdullah. Abdul was a drawing and painting tutor at Kalamunda Senior High School's Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program in 2008 and 2009.

Banners on the Terrace

Congratulations to Marco Trimboli for winning the Kalamunda Shire's "Banners on the Terrace Competition". Marco's design is currently with the Shire and is being prepared as a large scale banner. The banner will be on display along St George's Terrace during Local Government week later in the year. Congratulations also go to Jess Cottam who was a runner up. An image will be posted when we get one.

Art Camp 2011

Thirty of the Year 10, 11 and 12 GATE students had two nights and two days of creativity in the beautiful Nanga Bush Camp. Picasso’s distorted faces were the inspiration of the first night’s activity. Bandages were used to block out real features and students created new eyes, ears and mouths from modelling clay and positioned them onto each others faces. The results were amazing and quite freaky. The fun had a higher purpose as applying stage make up is a professional skill which can be used in industry. The photos of the distorted faces can now be used as references for portrait painting.

The second evening was a showcase of Shadow Puppets. Working in small groups students developed stories, characters and scenery. The results were astounding.

Other activities included environmental sculpture, screen design and swimming. Congratulations to all the students who participated for your excellent behaviour and attitude.

Stephen Armistead and Year 10 students

Visiting Art teacher Stephen Armistead presented a workshop on Video Art on Saturday 26 March. He showed examples of current video art and outlined the history of video in art with particular reference to the development of technology and it's impact on how a video artist can use the medium.

Students who undertook the workshop made short movies and experimented with editing techniques.

This was a valuable experience and particularly useful to Media students.

Saturday workshops are back on with some amazing artwork already in progress. We really are right back into it.

The annual art camp for Years 10, 11 and 12 is coming up on 16 -18 March. Only 30 spots available - so be quick.

20 November was the last day for GATE Visual Art Workshops in 2010.

At break time students participated in a tshirt colour wheel.

Then watched the pinata workshop smash into their lolly filled creations.

Joint painting winner at Darlington Arts Festival 2010

There’s only one week to go to the end of the GATE Visual Arts workshops for 2010!

We’ve had a truly wonderful year with continued successes in the events, festivals and competitions that we have entered. More importantly I’ve seen the development of excellent art skills occurring in every student and this is the real secret to the program’s success. Having the ability to turn art ideas into great artworks is the aim of program. I’m happy to say that each GATE student has a range of skills and processes that they can confidently use.

Year 7 students will be back on Wednesday 24 November for their orientation day. For more information please contact either your primary school or Mr Guthrie on 9293 6435.

Year 10 GATE students are invited to a graduation ceremony for all the special Kalamunda SHS programs on 30 November 2010 at 5pm. The event will be at school but exactly where will be decided closer to the day (hopefully we will use the new canteen area!)

The GATE booklet for 2011 will be posted home either late this year or early next year. Our first workshop for 2011 will be Saturday 13 February.

Late last term a few prize winners were announced. First up Bella come second in the Shaun Tan Art Award with her painting of Wendy. Robyn also had her work a painting of Shelby exhibited. congratulations to both students.

Ophelia and April won first and third respectively in the Shire of Kalamunda's Banners on the Terrace competition. Ophelia was very excited to receive her prize at the last full school assembly. Her artwork is at the printers, so I will publish it when I get a copy.

Saturday 29 May 2010 is GATE Visual Arts Open Day. Everyone is welcome to come along and see the students hard at work from 9.30 to 12 noon.

Art Camp 2010

GATE Visual Art camp was held in March at Bickley and was packed with creative adventures. On the first evening students used special effects makeup to create horrible flesh wounds. The ghastly creations were then staged and photographed by ex-student David Collins. Atmosphere was added using a smoke machine and lighting. In addition to this students drew a life model, sculpted clay heads, depicted landscapes in collage, bound and wove fibres from the natural environment and ate seemingly endless servings of cake. I give many thanks to the students and tutors who made this the camp a huge success.

Darlington Arts Festival

Congratulations to all the students who had their work selected for exhibition at The Darlington Arts Festival. Sonia and Tessia (both Year 12) were equal first for painting and Bella (Year 10) won the drawing category. Emma (Year 8) was highly commended for her print.

GATE Visual Arts students at Kalamunda Senior High School attend Saturday morning workshops as part of their extension. An artist or arts specialist works closely with small groups of students to tutor them in a variety of artistic pursuits. This blog is dedicated to sharing the results of all that hard work.
